New free highways this year in Spain.
26 Feb 2021

In total, more than 600 kilometers of motorways spread across the entire Iberian Peninsula will be liberalized, their concession expiring.

Already last year, at this time, two important sections in terms of traffic became free: the AP-4 between Seville and Cadiz and the AP-7 between Alicante and Tarragona, a great saving for travelers… This year , new highways will cease to be chargeable, two of them on the AP-7 and another on the AP-2, and this, from September 1. The Mediterranean highway better known as the AP 7, will add more than 400 additional kilometers thanks to two new sections that will cease to be chargeable: the one between Tarragona and La Jonquera (246 km) and that between Montmeló and El Papiol, in Barcelona, 179 kilometers long. So, on the AP-7, you will only have to pay 318 kilometers out of the 948 kilometers of total distance.

As for the AP-2, with the opening of the 215 km connecting Alfajarín, (Zaragoza), to El Vendrell (Tarragona), - until now managed by Aberti - it will now be free.

In total, 640 kilometers will therefore be free for drivers, but the (high) maintenance costs will be financed by the state and therefore plucked from the pockets of taxpayers.

More free sections in Catalonia

Catalonia will undoubtedly be the most favored by all these changes, because in addition to the sections of the main national highways, already mentioned, other parts will also be liberalized:

Thus, the C-32 (Barcelona-El Vendrell) and the C-33 (Barcelona-Parets), both owned by Abertis, will also remove their tolls this summer, and their management will be the responsibility of the Catalan regional government.
