Bigastro is a municipality located in the heart of the Vega Baja del Segura, just three kilometers from the regional capital Orihuela, which has marked its most recent history. Today it is a modern, current and highly competent population, based on a great industrial and service activity, with a significant cast of professionals and a high level of young university students. It preserves a lot of its traditional agricultural past due to its many small owners of citrus orchards, and because of the proximity of the Segura river bed, in whose groves you can go hiking and cycling.

2 km from the town center we have the "La Pedrera" Recreational Area, with barbecues, mountain-bike tracks, controlled camping area, and other services, very close to the reservoir of the same name where water from the Tajo-Segura Transfer is stored. .
At the time of its foundation, agriculture was dedicated to flax and hemp; In the 19th century, the fall of the textile sector made it refer to citrus fruits and garden products, also maintaining rainfed agriculture. Currently there is also industrial activity represented in the construction and manufacturing and tourism sectors.

The most typical foods are stew with balls and rice with rabbit. But the most important thing about Bigastrense gastronomy is its pastries: almojábanas, toñas, almendrados, monas and soplillos.
Verbenas, barracks, the dawn and the massive procession in honor of "grandfather" are the essence of the San Joaquín festivities in August. But there are many more: El Rosario de la Aurora, every Sunday in October. And the festivities of the Santa Cruz, the Pilgrimage of San Isidro, Santa Ana, etc. The musical tradition dates back more than a century and is expressed in the prestige of the Sociedad Unión Musical de Bigastro.

The ephemeris of "El Abuelo", as San Joaquín is popularly known, stands out from the rest. In October 1993, the 200th anniversary of the arrival in Bigastro of who today is its Patron Saint, immortalized in a sculpture by the Valencian image maker Felipe Andreu, was commemorated.
