Jijona

Gestalihome sells houses in Jijona,

a town that is very visited around Christmas time since this town is surrounded by the Christmas atmosphere and a product that stands out at this time, the nougat. But Jijona not only stands out for this sweet and for the ice cream that we like so much.

The truth is that it is a place with a lot of history (the Almohad castle around which the population expands dates from the 13th century and the oldest historical document in our municipal archive dates from 1350) that has left thousands of anecdotes and curiosities that we always have. I like to tell those who visit our town, sorry, our city. Many of them I cannot tell in person due to lack of time to friends "outsiders" or to clients of my nougat shop who go with the right time, so I have tried to leave them written in the following text that I will expand on.

Jijona is known for its artisan nougat, and when Christmas approaches, taking a walk through its streets full of sweet aromas is a joy.

Jijona has two churches and several hermitages dedicated to Santa Bárbara, San Antonio and San Sebastián, patron of the town together with San Bartolomé, in honor of which the Moors and Christians festivities are held.

Of the “Old” Church of Santa María, its entrance door is barely preserved. Right next to it is the Arciprestal Church of the Virgin of the Assumption.

On the Avenida de la Constitución, there is the City Hall, the market is held every Tuesday and all the parades and festive events take place.

The municipality of Jijona is one of the largest in the province of Alicante despite its small population. It ranges from very green areas to the north, through Carrasqueta (we recommend that you visit its viewpoint, open in 2019, where you can see from Benidorm to Santa Pola), being one of the lungs of Alicante, and very arid areas, further south, through the canyon of les Salines, comparable in its day to the desert areas of Almería.

La Carrasqueta is also famous for being one of the most beloved roads by motorcyclists, being a meeting place especially during weekends, especially in the well-known Venta Teresa that has been run for many years by the same family that will welcome you with much affection. There are also many routes for hiking and biking, both by national road and by mountains.

There are more than 100 natural sources throughout the Jijona area. Many of them served, in addition to drinking and irrigation, as troughs for animals, to wash clothes, etc. They have undoubtedly been one of the most important elements in establishing inhabited areas. Some of the best known are the Bugaya font (in La Carrasqueta, just below the viewpoint), Nutxes, Alequa, Moratell, Mascuna, Viola, Vivens (a place much loved by hikers, near Ibi), Ferro font (for its strong smell and taste of iron), the font de les salines (in a very arid area and which is also surrounded by salt), els bassons, Roset, Cotelles, Monnegre, etc.

Special mention has the Salt, a natural waterfall much loved in Xixona and where you can bathe. It is a pool that has recently been fixed to be able to visit it. Despite being a small hidden treasure well kept by the Jijonencos, it has more and more visitors and tourists, especially from Alicante.
