Monforte del Cid

a municipality in the Valencian Community, Spain. Located in the interior of the province of Alicante, in the region of Medio Vinalopó.

Nompot, the original name of Monforte del Cid, has the monarchical distinction of the Orlado Toisón de Oro, being a concession from King Felipe V in 1706, together with the title of "Villa Real, Leal y Fiel".

Monforte owes its "surname" to the Sierra del Cid, where a legend associates this geographical accident with the figure of the medieval knight. As stated in the charters of the city of Alicante, in the thirteenth century, the town received the name of Nompot. Perhaps because it was at the foot of a mountain crowned by a fortress, the name was changed to Monfort, hence the Castilian form of Monforte was adopted. As there were other towns with the same name, it received, at the beginning of the 20th century, the appendix of Cid, in reference to the Sierra del Cid that rises in its surroundings and that recalls the exploits of Rodrigo Dí¬az de Vivar in the province from Alicante.

At the time of El Cid, Monforte was within the Denia taifa. We know that there was a fortress where today the church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves stands, from the 15th century, although with extensions from the 18th century. Until its definitive expulsion in the 17th century, there was an important Moorish population settled around Morería Street. Today Monforte shows the passage of time in a heterogeneous way, coexisting in its old town houses from the 15th century with impersonal buildings from the late 20th century. The curious traveler will be able to find, on some old facades, notable examples of religious tilework from the Manises school.
