located in the extreme southwest of the province and adjacent to the Region of Murcia, it is the capital of the Vega Baja del Segura region.

The city center is 23 meters above sea level and on the banks of the Segura River. The city stands out, among several things, for its cultural and natural heritage, especially for its historic center (declared a historical-artistic and monumental complex), for its festivities, including its Holy Week (declared of international tourist interest), and for their beaches.

Orihuela is the historical capital of the so-called Vega Baja del Segura, which corresponds to the Geographical Zone of the Huerta de Orihuela, a geographical region that extends from the south of Elche to the border with the Huerta Murciana which administratively corresponds to the Vega Baja of the Segura.

It is a unique ecosystem in the world of which there are only 10 examples on the entire planet, four of them in Spain (La Huerta de Orihuela, La Huerta de Granada, La Huerta de Murcia and La Huerta de Valencia). All the territory that occupies this geographical extension is crossed by the Segura River, whose flow irrigates its entire extension.

In addition, the Huerta is fringed by large mountainous protrusions, which in turn also appear inside it, such as the Sierra de Orihuela, the Sierra de Callosa de Segura y Redován, the Sierra de Hurchillo, the Sierra Escalona , that of Cristo, that of Pujálvaret, as well as small hills and hills that interrupt the plain, giving it a variation in the height of the extension sometimes pronounced.

La Huerta de Orihuela contains an irrigation system of Muslim origin, the layout of which has sometimes remained unchanged since the Middle Ages. All this has led to being an ecosystem of maximum use of both the land and the water resources, but due to the illegal construction within it and the growth of the populations, they are contributing to a significant deterioration.

The La Pedrera Reservoir, also erroneously known as the Pedrera reservoir, is an artificial lagoon, the result of the Tajo-Segura Transfer that was built around the second half of the 20th century. Its flora is typical of humid areas such as the reed, the taray, the immortelle and the along. It serves as a habitat for numerous aquatic birds.

Orihuela's economy has traditionally been agriculture. It was first made of cereals, the vine and the olive tree in Roman times. From the Muslim conquest, the cultivation was irrigated, especially oranges and lemons. These crops were achieved thanks to the introduction of the ditch that persist to this day and continue to be the main crops, in addition to other vegetables and tubers such as potatoes, or fruit trees such as almonds, the latter in the interior area.

Secondary Sector: Mainly in construction, but also in the factories of the industrial park, named Puente Alto, and hosts numerous food companies, transporters, as well as the Orihuela fruit market (one of the most important in the province).
